Details
This is a 1996 Verve Records cassette single from the Kansas City soundtrack, made for Robert Altman's film about his hometown in the 1930s, when Kansas City was the wide-open home of hard-swinging after-hours jazz. Hal Willner produced the music, which has a band of modern players recreating that era's cutting contests. This one carries Count Basie's “Blues In The Dark” and Bennie Moten's “Moten Swing,” the tune named for the bandleader whose orchestra became the seed of Basie's own. It's a fine slice of Kansas City swing.
