Moussolou is the debut album by Oumou Sangaré, the Bamako-born Malian singer whose music brought the traditions of southern Mali's Wassoulou region to an international audience. Recorded in 1989 with arrangements by Ahmadou Ba Guindo and released internationally by World Circuit in 1991, the album combines the region's hunters' music traditions and kamelengoni, or youth's harp, with an urban, funk-driven pulse. Its title means “Women,” and its songs champion women's independence while challenging polygamy and forced marriage. “Diaraby Nene,” identified by the label as “The Thrill of Love,” addressed the then-taboo subject of women's enjoyment of passion. Ali Farka Touré introduced the album's cassette to World Circuit's Nick Gold, helping connect its West African success with an international release. This six-track CD carries catalog number WCD 021; its rear artwork credits all songs to Sangaré and identifies manufacture in Germany.
