Boogie Down Productions were one of the formative bands of both hardcore and political hip-hop, led by rapper KRS-One. They released a seminal hardcore rap album in 1987 - Criminal Minded - which was unfortunately overshadowed when one of the key members was murdered mere weeks after it's release. DJ Scott La Rock was trying to calm a dispute between a friend and a rival gang when they opened fire and shot him fatally in the neck.

Following this tragedy, KRS-One decided Boogie Down should teach about such social problems as drugs, violence and corruption, just as Public Enemy were doing. By All Means Necessary (1988) was another classic, as was Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip-Hop (1989). Despite the grand statement of the latter's title, it did prove to be a huge influence on 90s hip-hop stars such as Jay-Z. But following this, fans began to perceive KRS-One as being preachy, so he returned to street-level hardcore rap for 1992's Sex and Violence, before retiring the band-name and continuing a solo career.
