Truth And Rights, Observer Style is a 1994 Heartbeat Records collection centered on the work of Jamaican producer Winston “Niney” Holness, better known as Niney the Observer. A major figure in roots reggae and dub, Niney developed the Observer sound through productions marked by weighty rhythm sections, spiritual themes, social commentary, and studio experimentation. This 16-track program includes songs and versions concerned with Rastafari, African identity, political disorder, faith, and resistance, moving from “Hail I,” “False Rasta,” and “When Jah Speak” to “Mutiny (Confusion In A Babylon),” “African Child,” and “King Rasta.” Instrumental and version-oriented cuts such as “Clap The Barber” and “Fire Organ” also point toward the dub practice of rebuilding familiar rhythms through mixing and arrangement. The disc is best understood as a producer-led Observer collection rather than a claim that Niney performs every vocal selection.
