Saxtress is the 1996 recording debut of saxophonist Pamela Williams, whose Philadelphia upbringing and early influence from Grover Washington, Jr. helped shape a musical approach spanning smooth jazz, funk, and R&B. Her work with Patti LaBelle's band provided a foundation for a solo career that brought melodic saxophone playing into conversation with soul vocals and pop repertoire. The album's interpretation of Quincy Jones' “The Secret Garden” features Patti LaBelle, Teena Marie, and Pat Peterson, while Teena Marie also appears on “Latin Lullaby.” This eleven-track Heads Up CD includes “I Can Love You Like That,” “Natural Woman,” and the title track “The Saxtress,” making it an introduction to Williams' solo catalog and her connections to established soul performers.
