Face Value launched Phil Collins' solo recording career in 1981, bringing intimate songwriting together with pop, R&B, and experimental textures. Developed from home demos during a break in Genesis' activities, much of the material reflects the emotional aftermath of his first marriage's breakdown. Collins worked with Hugh Padgham on recordings that include the Phenix Horns, whose brass arrangements give songs such as “Behind The Lines” a distinctly different character from the Genesis version. “In The Air Tonight,” with its dramatic gated-reverb drum entrance, became the album's signature recording, while “I Missed Again” and “If Leaving Me Is Easy” show contrasting sides of his songwriting. The program closes with a reinterpretation of the Beatles' “Tomorrow Never Knows,” rounding out a debut that established a musical identity beyond his work with Genesis.
