For a snapshot of hip-hop, rap done right, start with Love and Hate by Graveyard Soldjas (1997). There's a strong Southern rap streak running through it.
On production, Playa Will and Roland & Goldfingers kept things tight. It's the kind of find that makes digging worth it.
