Karma is a landmark of spiritual jazz from tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, originally released in 1969. Its centerpiece, “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” was co-composed with vocalist Leon Thomas and combines a recurring bass figure, chant-like vocals, and extended improvisation. Thomas' distinctive vocal approach and Lonnie Liston Smith's piano are central to an ensemble that also brings flute, French horn, and percussion into the performance. Sanders moves between lyrical passages and the intense overblowing and multiphonics associated with his sound, balancing meditative repetition with free-jazz exploration. “Colors” closes the album on a shorter scale. This MCA CD listing retains “The Creator Has A Master Plan” as Part I and Part II.
