Lil Gangsta P: Meet The Lil Gangsta: CD

Straight out of East Oakland, Meet The Lil Gangsta is the one and only album from Lil Gangsta P (Anton Barrett Sr., also billed as Gangsta P). It came out in 1995 on Erin Records and is pure mid-'90s Bay Area gangsta rap, hip-hop, rap: raw, funky mobb music that collectors still chase today. P ran with Oakland underground legend Seagram, and on July 31, 1996, when gunfire broke out, Seagram shielded him and was killed. P was badly wounded but survived; he passed away in 2012.

He comes straight out of the lineage of Too $hort's Dangerous Crew, and you can hear it: Dangerous Crew producer Ant Banks laces two of the album's hardest cuts, and Dangerous Crew affiliate Shorty B was part of his circle. The rest is mostly produced by Troy White, with Banks handling "No Solicitation" and "The War", plus Terry T on "The Firm" and Elijah Baker on "Ghetto Star". Mr. Ill jumps on "No Solicitation", Day Dog and Lay Low hold down "The Firm", and Mrs. Shorty B joins "Get Down On It" with Captain Save 'Em, Suzette and Will on backing vocals. With cover design by Myron Potier and photography by Carla Mathis, this original Erin Records CD is a true 510 grail. It's the kind of record that rewards a second, third and fourth listen.
