Al Jarreau's Heaven and Earth (1992, Reprise) marked his first release since 1988 and found him navigating a more R&B-oriented direction under producer Narada Michael Walden. While the uptempo tracks lean into new jack swing territory, Jarreau truly shines on the ballads â the soaring title track, "If I Break," and the vocal gymnastics of "Superfine Love" are among the finest moments of his career. The album closes with a stunning two-part rendition of Miles Davis' "Blue In Green" with lyrics by Jarreau and Frank Martin, reaffirming that in jazz, Jarreau remained peerless. An admirable effort to create a contemporary sound while staying true to his roots.
