A rare and atmospheric entry in the Denver, Colorado rap catalog, Afterworld's self-titled 1999 debut on Xilan Records takes the city's underground scene in a distinctly darker direction. The production is grim and brooding — dark G-Funk beats with a mellow, cinematic weight — while the group's lyrical output is dense and layered, firmly in the backpack/conscious hip-hop tradition. Hard to find at the time of release and even harder to track down today, this one is a genuine collector's piece for fans of late '90s underground rap with a moody, introspective edge.
